Organic products labels

To recognize a true organic product it is necessary to pay attention to the characteristics indicated on the label.

The biological term emphasizes that it is a product obtained through particular methods of cultivation or breeding. Compared to traditional methods, there is less use of potentially toxic substances and there is a particular respect for the environment and the life of animals:

  • in organic farming only raw materials are used that have never required the use of chemical fertilizers or insecticides
  • in organic breeding, animals graze in specific lands and if they get sick they are treated without the use of antibiotics
  • in organic fishing, breeding is carried out according to certain techniques and regulations, which limit contamination.



Organic products are increasingly common, both in specialized stores and in supermarkets. However, many products, despite the name that echoes the bio, have nothing. In order to recognize a true organic product, the only reference is the label as producers have to respect the regulations. It is only through the data shown on the label, in fact, that the consumer can derive all the information in order not to be misled. Furthermore, the organic label guarantees that the entire production chain is monitored by a control body and that all the process has been carried out in compliance with the regulations.

Here are the words to read carefully on each label:

  • organic product. This terminology can only be used if 95% of its ingredients respect the principles of the biological method
  • sales description
  • name of the producing company
  • net weight
  • minimum term of conservation
  • the EU or NON-EU code
  • the code of the Control Body authorized by the Ministry of Agricultural Policies
  • list of ingredients, specifying any allergens
  • other information, related to the processing or production method, is entirely optional

Some products may not be entirely organic, but only have one or more organic ingredients. In these cases it is mandatory to specify it in the labeling for correctness towards the consumer. Organic products pre-packaged in the European Union must bear the European logo associated with the place of production, for example "agriculture in Italy". The European logo is represented by a leaf formed by twelve white stars on a green background with a comet in the center, a logo that the citizens of the Union have chosen among 3,500 proposals.
